Riverton Parke FFA members assisted at the Parke County Ag Day and Soil & Water Conservation Day by presenting stations to the elementary students. Parke County Ag Day was held Friday, May 2nd at the Parke County Fairgrounds. Ag Day is an event for all 4th graders in Parke County. Riverton Parke FFA presented two stations to the 4th grade students. Hadley Newman, Leah Clark, Maggie Virostko, and Cathleen McKee presented a station on plant propagation. They discussed the difference between growing a plant from a seed versus taking cuttings from parent plants. All students had the opportunity to take a cutting and take a new plant home. Jaydon Shaffer, Jenna Virostko, and Dawn Koester presented a station about the farm to table continuum. They went through all ingredients used to make a pizza and where those ingredients come from.
Soil and Water Conservation Day was held Tuesday, May 6th at Rockville Lake Park. Conservation Day is an event for all 5th graders in Parke County. Jase Martin, Joel Harrah, Lane Cottrell, and Mitchell Stepp presented a station over the soil horizons in a soil profile. They went through the different horizons and what is found in each layer with the students while making a ‘Edible Soil Profile’ using ingredients like pudding, cereals, cookies, and more.
