Motivational Speaker

Yesterday, Thursday, February 29, Riverton Parke Jr./Sr. High School students welcomed public speaker, Nick “Sunshine” Tokman. Tokman was a four-year cast member of the Emmy-winning show “The Deadliest Catch” as seen on the Discovery Channel. Tokman shared stories about his personal journey to become a crab fisherman in the Bering Sea. He impressed upon students that they should “become their own captain” to ensure their dreams become a reality.

Principal Kyle Kersey commented, “Nick did an amazing job with his presentation to our student body. His speech was entertaining, engaging, encouraging, and enjoyed by all. Nick's positive energy is contagious.”

Perhaps most telling are the following comments submitted by the students regarding Tokman’s presentation:

“It gave me the confidence to speak up and not give up on my dreams. Not to let people tell me how I should live my life.” ~Jazmyne Brooks

“I thought it was very inspiring and I enjoyed hearing his story and all that he went through. I loved hearing that he still chased his dream after all the hardships he went through.” ~Rhylie Cannon

“Throughout the entire presentation he showed all his hardships, and it blew my mind he kept going. It was actually quite inspiring, which I don't find most public speakers to be. He really showed that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. He did a really good job showing that if odds don't seem to be in your favor, make them be. I really enjoyed listening to his story.” ~Jazlynn Hill

“I thought that his presentation was very inspiring. He was good with kids and spoke to us on a personal level. His presentation made me do things I never thought I would do like dance in front of the school. He brought me out of my comfort zone and it was a lot of fun and was also informative. Overall it was great!” ~Jeremy Wilkey

“I feel more entitled to be who I am without fearing other people's words or opinions.” ~Maddy Posthauer

“Nick was a fantastic speaker. Not only did he get the crowd involved, but he made sure that his story had a connection to us. I think he did a great job! 11/10. He made what is normally uncomfortable for an average high-school student an enjoyable time. He showed us how "coming out of your shell", so to speak, is normal and healthy. I just think he did a really, really great job. Well done!” ~Johnathan Harper

“I found it to be somewhat inspiring. If someone can go through so much and still remain optimistic, I have to consider that impressive. While it may not rid me of my stress, it gives some new insight, which I appreciated. Plus, I had fun dancing with a few friends during that moment of the presentation.” ~Brielle Cottom

“I really liked his presentation because it's very uplifting. I love his energy, and his stories. His presentation made me feel that I can do anything.” ~CJ Leslie
