Riverton Parke FFA Competes in State Livestock Skillathon Contest

On Saturday, October 10th, four junior high Riverton Parke FFA members competed in the State Livestock Skillathon Contest held at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana.  The Livestock Skillathon Contest tests student’s knowledge on a variety of different livestock related topics in both an individual and team setting.  At the state contest, students completed identification of equipment, breeds, retail meats and feeds, judged classes of hay, wool, and retail meats, as well as completed quizzes over quality assurance and the animal science industry.  Students also completed one team activity which included questions over quality assurance.  Out of the 27 junior teams who competed in the state contest, Riverton Parke placed 7th overall.  Katilynn Koch placed 14th individually out of 91 contestants.  When asked about the Livestock Skillathon contest, Koch stated, “This contest has helped me learn different cuts of meat.  It has been a great experience that has helped me better understand many things about animals and agriculture.”  The Livestock Skillathon Team is coached by FFA advisor, Michaela Woods.
